There is an oft quoted line in the Life of Donne, "the English Church had gained a second S. Augustine (sig. B2)." Can anyone tell me what (sig. B2) refers to?
The book is made up of quires, a gathering of pages, stitched together. A Folio has two leaves in a quire, a Quarto four leaves, and an Octavo eight leaves. Each quire is marked with a symbol indicating its place in the volume. The signatures on the finished book will begin A1, A2, etc. in the first quire, B1, B2 etc in the second quire and so on. sig. B2 refers to page 2 of the second quire in the book. Hope this helps.
Hope you can answer another question. I've read in Stephen Marx's, Shakespeare and the Bible that Donne was King James's favorite preacher. If I recall, Marx did not have a footnote on that statement. Is this a generally accepted notion/fact in academia? Where did Marx get the information to make that claim? How do we know that Donne was in fact King James's favorite preacher? Just wondering. Thanks in advance!
