For a novel in which a character, a graduate student in English literature, is applying for a fellowship to do dissertation research on Donne in the U.K., I'm trying to determine whether Oxford or Cambridge would be her most logical destination. Which university's research collection would be most useful to a Donne scholar? (The character is writing on gender politics in Donne, although she is having trouble coming up with something fresh.)
OXFORD! That's where Peter McCullough and his team are working on the new Oxford edtion of Donne's sermons. It's also where the formidable John Carey is Emeritus professor.
Cambridge! Though I tried to do this unsuccessfully. I did not end up finding a topic that could engage a faculty supervisor for research -- which is far more important than the "collections" in my view. Still, it was a great three years reading British Modernism and I will always be grateful for that preparation. (I am finally getting to do my Donne research now -- in Wales -- and that is mostly because one of my dearest Cambs tutors led me at last to a "fresh" topic.)
